Embracing our new consciousness as a “butterfly,” however that butterfly appears to us in our unique dreams and visions, requires conscious aging. If we want to avoid falling into society’s stereotype of useless, irrelevant, invisible elders as we age, we first must be fully visible to ourselves. To live our lives with meaning, with passion, purpose and possibility, we must be fully conscious of who we are and who we can reimagine ourselves to be.
As intensely as the first part of life is focused on building and managing our outer world, the second part of life is a chance for intense, impassioned exploration and discovery of our inner world.
- We discover work that has purpose and meaning.
- We learn to see beauty in a body that’s no longer youthful.
- We arrive at an emotional balance.
- We move to new levels of sexuality and sensuality.
- We discover what matters in life.
- We reignite our passions and discern our life’s purpose.
Conscious aging is the psycho-spiritual aspect of growing older that brings us face-to-face with our mortality and demands that we learn to stand in the flow of time and timelessness, to meet the deepest and highest parts of our humanness and to own our connection to the divine essence within and without. Conscious aging is what brings us to realization of “presence” and ushers us eventually into the role of elders.
Closely aligned and of great import is the more concretized “aging consciously,” where we engage in making life and career choices to give us a leg up in aging successfully as well as garnering the skills and awareness of what we must do to prepare for our eventual passing so we can secure the legacy we want to leave for our loved ones and the world.
An important part of coming to peace with aging is fully living who we are and who we are meant to be. As life begins to seem more limited and precious, we realize that there is no longer time to waste on the non-essentials or on what others think of us; it is time to make a real difference and to discover and live our purpose here on Earth.
